A Story of Dedication and Growth

Meet Gwen, the Director of Our House at CAP, whose journey reflects a deep commitment to compassion and community care. With over 20 years of experience, Gwen embodies the philosophy of "unconditional positive regard." And everyone who meets her can feel it.

A Compassionate Path

Gwen grew up with modest means, where the idea of college seemed distant. Her early life experiences shaped her understanding of the challenges many face. “I grew up in a little bit of poverty,” she shares, but these experiences also fueled her passion for helping others.

Initially drawn to Our House as a volunteer, Gwen found herself inspired by the community and its residents. “I felt so supported,” she explains, emphasizing the importance of connection in the healing process.
Eventually, her volunteer work led her to pursue nursing. And we're so glad she did.

Building a Community of Care

As a nurse, Gwen’s role extends beyond medical care; she fosters an environment where residents feel loved and heard. “Within about three months of being here, people start to heal from the inside out,” she notes, highlighting the impact of a nurturing community like Our House.

Her journey at Our House has been marked by growth and resilience, especially during challenging times like the pandemic. Gwen ensured the facility remained a safe haven for residents while navigating the complexities of community healthcare.

Creating Meaningful Connections

Gwen cherishes the relationships she’s built over the years at Our House. One of her favorite memories involves providing pedicures to a visually impaired resident. They shared stories and laughs. “Being a nurse at Our House allows me to take the time for individual care,” she reflects, underscoring the importance of personal connections in healthcare.

Despite the challenges, including the loss of volunteers during COVID-19, Gwen remains optimistic about the future.
She knows volunteers are the heart and soul of Our House. "Volunteers enrich our community with their presence and support."

A Lasting Impact

Gwen’s dedication to her work has not only transformed the lives of those she serves but has also enriched her own. “I have grown and changed so much over these 21 years,” she says with a smile. Her experiences have deepened her understanding of compassion, making her a better partner, parent, and community member.

As Gwen continues her journey, she emphasizes the importance of connection and compassion in all aspects of life.
“Every person I’ve encountered has touched my heart,” she concludes, reminding us all of the power of empathy in creating a supportive community.
