Michael’s Journey: Paving the Path to Authenticity
A Story of Resilience and Transformation
Meet Michael, a 60-year-old Portland native whose life story is one of resilience and the pursuit of authenticity. From a challenging childhood to a successful career and a journey of recovery, Michael’s path is inspiring.
Overcoming a Difficult Past
Michael grew up in a tumultuous environment, facing abuse and bullying at home and school. Despite these hardships, he developed a persona that helped him survive. “I figured out a way to survive and to make it work,” he reflects, acknowledging the duality of his experiences—both painful and formative.
Michael’s early career as a professional ballet dancer set him on an unique trajectory. But after a significant injury, he transitioned into fashion, leveraging his creativity and skills, at first through deception. “I borrowed a friend's portfolio and lied my way through an interview,” he admits. "But I knew I could do the job."
A Turning Point
After more than a decade in fashion, working for brands like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Hackett London, Michael was struggling. His work was demanding and left little space for relationships. Michael turned to alcohol to cope, but his drinking was putting his health at risk.
After years in London, Michael returned to Portland to rebuild his life. He faced his addiction and sought support, including from Cascade AIDS Project, where Michael met Daniel, a mentor who remains by his side through his recovery journey.
"My relationship with CAP started everything,” Michael shares. Through CAP, he accessed Fora Health for holistic addiction treatment, which became a pivotal moment in his recovery. “I didn’t want just a quick fix; I was committed to getting better,” he emphasizes.
Embracing Authenticity
In recovery, Michael revisited his past and identified his core values: honesty, living his truth, and integrity. “These values changed my life,” he says, explaining how they guide his decisions and interactions today.
With support from CAP, Michael also accessed housing assistance, allowing him to pursue an undergraduate degree in Mental Health Social Services and Addiction Counseling without the stress of financial burdens. “It really started with CAP—they have been life-changing,” he states.
Giving Back and Moving Forward
Now, when he's not in class, Michael dedicates his time to volunteering at Blanchett House, where he connects with clients and builds community. He continues to meet with Daniel regularly, sharing his progress and newfound happiness in living his authentic life.
Michael’s journey is a testament to the power of support, resilience, and the pursuit of authenticity. With the help of CAP and his commitment to recovery, he has transformed his life and is making a difference in the lives of others.
